Drag at The Capitol
We’ve been spending quite a bit of time at The Texas State Capitol recently. Not quite what we had in mind for a busy 2023.
There have been a handful of anti-drag bills (prohibiting drag in public places) that have been proposed throughout the country. In Austin, Tx - we’ve been protesting against SB12, a bill that not just creates a negative narrative about Drag, but a false one. It implies that Drag is inappropriate for minors regardless of the content. It implies that people can’t wear gender markers (clothing and accessories) that are different than the gender they were born with. Whaaa?!
Drag has range. And we believe that, just like any art, it can be adapted to fit it’s audience. The types of drag shows that are open to the public where all ages may be present are curated so that they are appropriate. Drag wouldn’t have the success and become the main stream, beloved art that it is if this wasn’t true.
We believe in the freedom of expression. And as a company, we believe in being sensitive to our audience with appropriate content for all those in attendance.
Drag is merely a grand, theatrical representation and dramatization of an illusion, a gender or fantasy. It’s vast and has a HUGE spectrum. All drag shows are not created equal.
We hope to continue to show up and educate people on this art form that they may not know much about. We hope to continue to show up with grace and strength.
